I also decided on the story behind my army while I was painting this guy. His head made me think of a sailor, so I thought it would be cool to make my soldiers mercenaries with a ship. The captain also fits in I think, but you'll see that when I finished him. He has a very cool hat with feathers on it!
I also thought about some additions when I'm done with the first part of my army. Ofcourse I want some free companies (my regular sailors) and some halberdiers (not sure where they fit in, but they are cool and very common in the empire, so maybe they got bored in their home town and joined my crew). Pistoliers are very cool too, but I'm not sure how cavalry will fit on a ship. I could just include them anyway for when I fight on land (probably every battle I will fight, until me AND my oponnent both build an actual ship to fight a scenario on the sea). I also want some ogres (bulls I think) and the pirate maneater, because he is cool.
The ogres and pistoliers are still far away though, first I'll finish the first part. I've decided that the two handgunners with the very light skin will be newbies in my army and that they haven't sailed yet. The sailor I've painted yesterday will be one of my veterans though. The last thing I decided is that I will leave the mortar for now and use a great cannon. It's more fitting on a ship I thought and I also think cannons are cooler than mortars.
Now it's time for my first real sailor!

To paint the skin I did this:
Basecoat with Dwarf Flesh
Highlight with a Bronzed Flesh/Dwarf Flesh mix (about 1:1)
Highlight again with Bronzed Flesh
Finally, highlight with a Bronzed Flesh/Bleached Bone mix (again about 1:1)
In the future I want to try out using Tanned Flesh too, I used that on my dwarves too, but I forgot it on this guy.
Finally I would like to say that I will probably try to convert models too, but I never really did that in the past, so it might take a while for me to try it out. If I get a brilliant idea though I'm sure sailors/pirates will be a great theme.
That's it for now, the handgunners I said I would be painting this weekend are on their way too, so they will be on here very soon I think.
